Leila asks :

Hi Lucy,

I am worried quite often and can't get to sleep over it and would like to find a way to stop it.

Having something on your mind at bed time can often be a real nuisance when you are trying to get some rest.

I would suggest keeping a diary and writing in it before you try to go to sleep. Write all of your worries down in it, as if you have told someone about them and hopefully you will feel like you have got it off your chest and can rest easy. Often writing things down can help you make sense of them too- so something that you have been worrying over, after exploring it, might not be that big after all.

Can you talk to your friends or family about your worries? A problem shared is a problem halved as they say- this could also give you a sense of relief if you feel you have unburdened yourself with a worry by telling someone.

Worrying can be an unnecessary emotion as often the things we worry about don’t come true- it’s just human nature to prepare for the worst. Perhaps try to focus on the things you can change rather than the 'what ifs' in life as these can be self-destructive. There is often no end to considering the endless negative possibilities in life.

You could speak to someone in an alternative therapy shop and see what there is to offer there. Something like an essential oil can help to relax you before you go to sleep so perhaps they might suggest something that avoids having to go to the doctor.
