Help asks :

Hi Lucy,

I am going out with a man for the past 5 months but I just feel as if my heart is not in it. He is extremely clingy and never wants me to be with my other friends. I don’t know how to let him go without hurting him.

Chances are he will hurt him in the short term, however if you have only been going out for 5 months then hopefully his attachment to you is not too strong, despite the impression he might be giving you with the clinginess.

If your thoughts are like this now, it’s likely that your feelings are going to get weaker rather than stronger for him, as it sounds like you have already made up your mind that it’s not for you.

He may be sad about it for a while; however once he finds someone else and is able to move on he might be able to let you go.

There is always hurt caused in a relationship breakdown, however sometimes you have to be a little selfish and ask yourself ‘do you want to be the unhappy one for the long term?’ If not then you have it in your power to change things, by causing a bit of short lived upset.
