Ellie asks :

Hi Lucy,

I have wanted to sing since I was very little and a competition is coming up and I can enter, my friends and family think I should do it as it is my dream. However I am unsure what to do, as I am afraid I will embarrass myself in front of millions of people. Please give me advice, what should I do? Ellie x

Often we regret the things we don't do more than the things we do, so perhaps you will regret it more if you don't take your chance now while it's here. If it is your dream do you owe it to yourself to at least try?

Your friends and family probably wouldn't encourage you to go for it if they thought that you would embarrass yourself, so try to put your trust in them and yourself.

It is understandable that you are afraid but if you do decide to go ahead with it, all you can do is practice your song as much as possible so you are focused and well prepared then take things from there.

There is a chance that nerves may take over so it might help to sing in front of more people other than your friends and family to build up your confidence. Could you record a video and post it on Facebook? Perform in a local pub? Anything to get you used to putting your voice out there and singing in front of larger crowds.

Alternatively, if you are lacking in confidence this year and the competition is an annual event, you could use this year to build it up and enter next time around?
