Jessie asks :

Hi Lucy,

I feel really sad, frustrated and angry at everything and everyone and the weird thing is that it only happens at home, not when I'm with friends. Help please?

Chances are; you feel worse when you are at home because you might have more alone time. This increased opportunity to think about your life and analyse it in the areas you might not be happy with can lower your mood.

Perhaps you have a friend who you can call upon when you feel this way? Is there someone you are closer to in your group of friends that you can rely on to be discreet?

Maybe starting a journal could help you to write all of your negative feelings down. What is it about being at home that you are angered, frustrated or saddened by? If you put it down on paper, it might help you to get some clarity on what is triggering these feelings.  This could give you a better chance at finding solutions or ways of coping with them.

You talk about being at home but not the people who might be there- could you talk to a family member or roommate about the place you are in? If you know that they are around when a mood like this strikes then perhaps they can be a sounding board for you?

If you feel that none of these avenues are working for you then perhaps you could ask for a referral to see a counsellor from your doctor? This could help you explore your world confidentially and with someone impartial- to encourage you to better understand your ups and downs.
