Keira Knigtley's iconic Atonement dress is being auctioned for charity.

The stunning green silk evening gown worn by the British actress as Cecilia Tallis in the romantic World War II movie will be sold in an online auction to raise money for Variety - The Children's Charity of Southern California.

The auction opened online at www.clothesoffourback.org today (01.02.08) with a minimum bid of $1,000. It is due to close on March 1.

The green dress was recently voted as the most iconic film outfit beating off well known costumes including Audrey Hepburn's Givenchy gown from Breakfast at Tiffany's and Olivia Newton John's sexy Grease leggings.

The dress caused a stir in the fashion world when the film was released last summer with every high street keen to get their hands on a version of it.Female First reported last month that New York clothing boutique Faviana has been the first to recreate it.

The original gown has been authenticated for auction by costume designer Jacqueline Durran, who is nominated for an Academy Award for her work on 'Atonement'.

Variety is a non-profit organisation which aims to assist addicted, abused, neglected and physically-challenged children.

'Atonement' is up for seven Oscars at this month's Academy Awards, including Best Picture
