Billy Joel has checked himself out of rehab after receiving a month of treatment for alcohol addiction. The US star, who has a long history of alcohol addiction, left the Betty Ford Centre, in California, on Sunday morning (10.04.05) according to his publicist, Claire Mercuri. Joel had booked himself into the treatment centre in March after suffering from a crippling bout of gastro-intestinal distress brought on by heavy drinking. Mercuri said Joel had decided that was the moment to tackle his alcoholism head on. The 55-year-old singer is now back at his Long Island home, which he shares with third wife Kate Lee, 26. Joel has been hospitalised three other times in the last two-and-a-half years, twice for minor injuries received in car accidents and once previously for rehab. Last year, the 'Uptown Girl' singer crashed his car into the home of a 94-year-old lady as he was returning home.
In January 2003, he smashed his Mercedes-Benz into a tree but was not seriously hurt. After a June 2002 car accident, Joel checked himself into rehab to get treatment for his alcohol addiction.
