Liz Hurley's wedding rift

10-04-2007 19:00

Liz Hurley's new father-in-law is preparing to testify against her over claims her wedding flouted Indian laws.

Vinod Nayar has agreed to provide evidence in legal proceedings brought against the newlyweds by Vishnu Khandelwal, a devout Hindu.

It is alleged the couple drank alcohol, wore leather shoes and behaved inappropriately by kissing in front of cameras during the ceremony in Rajasthan last month.

Prosecuting lawyer H M Saraswat said: "Vinod contacted me. He wants to disclose some important facts. He told me that when Arun Nayar and Liz Hurley came to the mandap (marriage place), Arun Nayar left his footwear outside but Liz Hurley refused to remove her footwear.

"Our intention is to prove that the procedures adopted by both the accused for their marriage is against our Hindu rites."

The couple have been charged at a court in Jodhpur under section 295 A of the Indian Penal Code.

If found guilty of a "deliberate and malicious act" against the religion Liz and Arun could face a three-year prison sentence.
