Taylor Swift thinks writing about having her heart broken is good for her and her career.

The 23-year-old singer, who is renowned for writing songs about her ex-boyfriends including John Mayer and Harry Styles, admits "heartbreak" is her favourite emotion to draw inspiration from when it comes to her song-writing and it also helps her to move on.

The 'I Knew You Were Trouble' hitmaker told E! Latin's 'Coffee Break': "I think when you're heartbroken you need music more than when you're not."

She added: "There's something so beautiful about people who are heartbroken; they think about how they're feeling much more. I think when you're happy and when you're in love, you don't need to think about it, it's just there. Love is one of those things that is so simple, you don't need to think about it when it's good, you only need to think about it when it's bad, so when music is all that you have and you're lonely or you're missing someone and you write a song that says exactly how you feel, there is sort of a gratification you get from that, it almost helps you move on."

The '22' singer also revealed that her next big goal will be writing a follow up to her hit 'Red' but she won't start thinking about a new album for another six months.

She explained: "I think it's important to give yourself time to just stop writing. I've been writing here and there but when I'm making an album I'm writing every day. You need to just take a second to clear out your brain."
