The number of individuals residing by themselves will increase by 53 per cent in twenty years to 9.9 million, a document stated yesterday.
Across the same time, properties with wedded couples are due to decrease to 8.8 million from 9.6 million.
Stephen Leonard, director of mortgages at Alliance & Leicester, is quoted as saying in the Mirror newspaper:"Our report shows demand for housing rising with an increase in flats and conversions due to more one person homes."
Over 200,000 additional homes will be required per year, with three quarters being allocated to those living on their todd.
