Naveen Andrews has described Diana as a intimate and simple love story.

The actor will take on the role of surgeon Hasnat Khan in the new biopic about the final years of Princess Diana's life.

And while this is a movie about one of the world's most famous women, Andrews says the heart of this film is a very simple one.

Speaking at the London press conference for the film the actor said: "When I first read Stephen’s script the first thing that I thought of was Brief Encounter; which is my favourite love story on film, in the sense that it is impossible. These people do have a connection, but it is just not going to work.

"They are two human beings, and it is a very intimate, simple love story between two people; all they want is to be cherished, loved and respected.

"I haven’t seen that, and I think that our film is unique because we don’t have anything like that."

The movie sees Andrews team up with Naomi Watts, while Oliver Hirschbiegel is in the director's chair.

Diana is out now.
