The Best Picture Oscar category is always the most exciting, especially now that ten movies can bag that all-important nomination.

Birdman

Birdman

We have already been treated to some terrific movies this year, and there are so many more on the horizon that could well find themselves in the mix come the beginning of 2015.

We have already taken a look at the actors and actresses that could be in the running for gongs, now we take a closer look at some of the films that deserve a chance at Oscar glory.

- Birdman

Ever since Birdman appeared on the festival circuit earlier this year, all of the critics have been raving it about it, as Alejandro González Iñárritu returns to the director's chair.

Iñárritu has been behind films such as Babel and 21 Grams during his career, but Birdman looks set to be his biggest chance of Oscar glory - perhaps Birdman is the front-runner for Best Picture at the moment.

The movie follows a washed up actor (Michael Keaton) who once place an iconic superhero who stars in a Broadway play to help resurrect his career.

The director has brought together an all-star cast as Keaton is joined by Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Zach Galifianakis, Naomi Watts, and Andrea Riseborough are all on board.

This is a movie that really has been whipping up a storm on the festival circuit since September, and a nomination looks set to be a certainty.

- Foxcatcher

Another movie that has had a lot of festival support this year is Foxcatcher - it is also one of the early 2015 films that I really cannot wait to see.

The movie is the latest offering from filmmaker Bennett Miller - who was behind terrific movies such as Capote and Moneyball - and how he has another true story for us to enjoy.

Foxcatcher follows their relationship between with eccentric millionaire John du Pont and wrestling brothers Mark and Dave Schultz. However, this relationship has devastating consequences.

Steve Carell is on board as du Pont while Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo star as Mark and Dave Schultz. Sienna Miller, Vanessa Redgrave, and Anthony Michael Hall complete a terrific line-up.

Foxcatcher was one of the highlights of the Cannes Film Festival this May, and has been a favourite for an Oscar nomination all year. I expect Carell to be in the running for Best Actor as well.

- Unbroken

Screenings for Angelina Jolie's latest directorial officer Unbroken are yet to start, but this is a movie that has been a long time Oscar favourite.

Unbroken is the first film for Jolie since she made her directorial debut with In the Land of Blood and Honey back in 2012, and this looks set to truly put her on the map as a filmmaker.

The movie is set to chronicle the life of Olympic runner Louis Zamperini, who was taken prisoner by the Japanese during the Second World War and had to battle to survive in a camp.

Jack O'Connell has already had a terrific year with Starred Up and '71, and now he is going to finish 2014 with a bang as he takes on the central role of Zamperini - he could be a potential Oscar contender.

O'Connell is joined on the cast list by Domhnall Gleeson, Garrett Hedlund, Luke Treadaway, and Finn Wittrock - it really is an exciting cast of great young talent.

- Selma

We received the first full-length trailer for Selma earlier this week and it look like it is going to be another movie not to miss.

We all know how much the Academy loves a biopic, and there are a few really good ones on the horizon over the coming weeks and months.

Directed by Ava DuVernay, Selma follows the rise of Martin Luther King and the civil right marches that changed America forever.

David Oyelowo is on board as Martin Luther King, while Tim Roth, Giovanni Ribisi, Cuba Gooding Jr, and Tim Wilkinson are some of the other standout names on the cast list.

The supporting for Selma seems to be growing, and I can't wait to see more footage from the film on the run up to the release early next year.

Other movies that are winning supporting and could find themselves in the running include America Sniper, Big Eyes, The Theory of Everything, and The Imitation Game.
