With the MTV EMA awards gracing Liverpool tonight we thought it was only fair we shared out hot picks for this years set of gongs.

Act Of 2008

Nominees:

Amy Winehouse / Britney Spears / Coldplay / Leona Lewis / Rihanna

Amy Winehouse hasn’t really been the ‘act’ of 2008 has she? If it was an award for the breakdown of 2008 she would be right up there with Britney Spears. But despite her incredible voice and Britney’s attempt at a ‘reinvention,’ 2008 hasn’t seen much from either girl to make them deserve this gong.

Leona Lewis is plodding along quite nicely and has made a hell of an impact in the US but her current hits seem to be falling in the middle of the chart rather than up there at number one whilst fellow Brit’s Coldplay keep churning out immense track after track.

Finally, Rihanna has had a good run this year, but I have the feeling nothing is ever going to top her colossal track Umbrella no matter how hard she tries.

FemaleFirst votes for:

Coldplay - a bit like marmite - you either love them or hate them… and we love them!

New Act

Nominees:

Duffy / Jonas Brothers / Katy Perry / Miley Cyrus / OneRepublic

Duffy has brought a bit of class back to the music scene that we have been missing for so long and her individual sound sets her apart from the other singer/songwriters clamouring onto the scene at the moment.

The Jonas Brothers serve up that plateful of cheesy pop we need every so often whilst OneRepublic dish out some sexy hits for the ‘grown ups’. Miley Cyrus has somehow found her way into the charts thanks to her famous father and Katy Perry has spent the past couple of months wandering kissing girls and liking it!

FemaleFirst votes for:

One Republic - Their soulful sounds will get them anywhere… and Apologise is my alarm tone!

Most Addictive Track

Nominees:

Coldplay 'Viva La Vida' / Duffy 'Mercy' / Katy Perry 'I Kissed A Girl' / Kid Rock 'All Summer Long' / P!nk 'So What'

All the tracks nominated have completely infected my ears this year, with Coldplay helping me through many a traffic jam on the way to work whilst Katy Perry banging on about her lesbian desires made me want to get out and leave my car on the M6 just to avoid listing to her once more.

Duffy’s Mercy got to that point where I’d heard it so much that I really started to detest it after a while and Kid Rock’s take on the Lynard Skynard’s Sweet Home Alabama was a huge hit in The FemaleFirst office that we ever went out and bought his album.

P!nk’s So What is a great man-hater tune for anyone who split up with another half this year, and I tell you, it couldn’t have come at a better time for me as P!nk really is the best woman for making for feel empowered.

FemaleFirst votes for:

P!nk for making women everywhere realise they don‘t need a man in their life.

Album Of The Year

Nominees:

Alicia Keys - As I Am / Britney Spears - Blackout / Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends / Duffy - Rockferry / Leona - Lewis Spirit

Alicia Keys’ album didn’t really get the recognition it deserved as this woman has such an incredible voice, but after her complete suicide that was the James Bond theme for 2008 I really have express my disappointment with her.

Britney Spears did make a feeble attempt at her ‘comeback’ but I don’t think Blackout did her previous outings real justice and I am holding my breath for Circus before I start dishing out awards to her… she has a lot of making up to do in my eyes!

There’s not much you can say about Coldplay’s offering except that it was yet another fantastic offering from Chris Martin and friends that could either lift you up when you feel down or push you over the edge into suicide.

Duffy really made her mark in the music industry with her incredible debut Rockferry, which showed of her versatility and passion for music. Whilst Leona Lewis proved that she is not just another X Factor winner but a fantastic musician who should have been on the scene long before winning a singing competition.

FemaleFirst votes for:

Duffy - she brings something to the music industry that it has been missing for such a long time.

FemaleFirst - Ruth Harrison
