Over 25% of respondents to online poll more likely to commute by bike if employers provided changing and shower facilities Cycle 08 - Earls Court London from this Friday 10 – Sunday 12 Oct 2008 A lack of changing and shower facilities at the workplace is one of the main reason Brits are put off cycling to work, a poll by this week’s Cycle 08 show has found.

Over 25% of respondents to the poll which surveyed 500 cyclists revealed that they would be more likely to use pedal power to get to work if their employers provided changing and shower facilities. The government’s Cycle to Work scheme offers tax breaks for employers and employees big savings on new bikes.

However, the poll by Cycle 08 shows that it is the facilities in the office are an important consideration when employees decide whether or not to commute by bike.

Cycle 08 Director Andrew Brabazon said: “The government scheme to encourage employers to get employees to cycle to work is a great step towards creating a fitter, healthier and happier workforce. Plus providing facilities for people to wash and change is a huge incentive to getting them on their bikes.”

One of the aims of Cycle 08 is to get more people cycling to work. The survey has also found that how people look on their bikes is also very important to the prospective cycle commuter. Cycle 08 which takes place at Earls Court from 10-12 October will host a fashion show to prove you can still look trendy on your cycle, and will give the opportunity for both male and female cyclists to view the latest cycle clothing from top brands such as Endura and Cannondale.

The survey found that:
• Over 50% of respondents claim that looking good whilst cycling is very important to them
• Over 65%claim that comfortable and practical clothing always takes preference over fashionable or flattering clothing
• Almost 50%of those surveyed say there isn’t currently enough fashionable cycle clothing around
• 25% claim that more flattering cycle clothing encourage them to cycle more
• 50% of respondents said how you feel when cycling is just as important as how safe you are, with both more
important than how fast you can be and how many calories you can burn
• 25% of respondents revealed that they would be more likely to use pedal power to get to work if their employers provided changing and shower facilities Andrew Brabazon said: “Results show that the way you look on your bike is important to many people, and is clearly a catalyst to giving the public confidence to get on their bikes.

There has been a great advancement in manufacturers making more stylish clothing whilst not compromising on comfort and practicality, and we’re delighted that the top manufacturers are set to display their new ranges at our Fashion Show at Cycle 08.”
