The Duke of Edinburgh - who was on a trip with Queen Elizabeth to meet cadets celebrating their 150th anniversary at Wyvern Barracks in Exeter, Devon - made the remark to 24-year-old Elizabeth Rendle and her friends yesterday (11.03.10).
The duke's question provoked laughter from Elizabeth, a barmaid, after he asked her what she did for a living.
She told the Daily Mail newspaper: "I told him I worked in a club. He then asked if it was a strip club." The 88-year-old royal then made the awkward situation even worse by joking that such a job would probably be "too cold", given the current weather.

Despite this, Elizabeth said she thought the inappropriate joke was rather funny.
She said: "He was just going round chatting with people, asking them what they did for a living. It was a joke and we were all laughing which drew everyone else's attention. I don't think he put his foot in it."
The queen also had the cadets laughing when she claimed she couldn't take part in a rock-climbing exercise with them because she was wearing the wrong footwear.
Corporal Jess Palfrey - who has been a Cadet for four years - said: "I asked her if she wanted to climb the wall and she said 'I don't think I have got the right shoes on for that'. She asked if it was fun and said it looked quite difficult. It was amazing to meet her, nerve-wracking, I was shaking, but it's such a sense of achievement."
