Sweden's Queen Silvia and her daughter Princess Madeleine boycotted the Polar Music Prize

Queen Silvia and her daughter Madeleine refused to attend the  Polar Music Prize due to recipient Chuck Berry's human trafficking conviction.

The 70-year-old monarch and her daughter, 32, refused to attend the event held in Stockholm on Tuesday due to prize recipient Chuck Berry's past conviction for human trafficking.

The 87-year-old musician was given a three year prison sentence in 1961 after having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl and travelling with her across the United States.

Quen Silvia - who is the founder the World Childhood Foundation charity where her daughter also works - told Swedish newspaper Expressen: "Unfortunately I received this information very late and when I heard this, I felt that it was not okay to be there, at the prize ceremony. So many people believe in me, in the charity Childhood and in the princess.

"It was a family decision and I hope that everybody can accept it."

The annual award ceremony usually gives out two prizes - one to a contemporary musician and one classical - with previous winners including Paul McCartney, Ravi Shankar, Led Zeppelin, Mstislav Rostropovich and Bruce Springsteen.
