Amazon.co.uk Review A solid enough thriller held together by some somewhat implausible plot devices, IDeception/I stars Ben Affleck as Rudy, whose cellmate Nick is lucky enough to be pen-pal to the beautiful Ashley (Charlize Theron) who in turn has pledged herself, body and soul to the man inside whom she has never set eyes upon. Upon his release, Rudy decides to pose as Nick in order to take up with this luscious and adoring female. Unfortunately, the scheme backfires on Rudy when he discovers that Ashley was apparently a pawn in her ruthless brother Monster's game to coerce him into helping him and his gang of gun-runners rob a casino that Nick used to work in. IDeception/I rumbles along at a pretty seedy, violent pace for a long time, with Rudy's efforts to escape resulting in Monster (a menacing Gary Sinise) using him as a dartboard in one memorably brutal scene. Following their raid on the casino, however (clad in Santa outfits), the plot takes a couple of devilish twists and turns which reward the viewer prepared to come this far down the road with these people. The lack of empathy may be redeemed by some viewers with a scene featuring Charlize Theron naked in a pool. --IDavid Stubbs/I

| Customer Reviews: A Thriller Whodunnit Action Adventure rolled into one!!! September 7, 2002 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Deception is a "Thriller" "Who dunnit" and "Action Adventure" rolled into one. It follows the misfortune of Rudy (Ben Affleck)as he is plunged into a dangerous scam to rob a Casino. It all starts when Rudy's cellmate Nick arranges to meet his penpal Ashley when both he and Rudy get released from jail in three days time. Unfortunatly Nick gets killed. So when Rudy gets out he see's Nick's penpal waiting for him and he feels sorry for her. So he pretends to be Nick. Only Rudy grows to wish he hadn't, Ashley has an extremly aggressive criminal for a brother who has been reading Nick's letters. Unfortunatly for Rudy, in these letters Nick has described in detail how he used to work as a security guard at the Casino, and now Angie's brother won't let Rudy go until he has helped him rob the Casino. The trouble is Rudy has never seen the Casino before in his life............but if he doesn't help he knows it will be the end of his life and confessing that he's not really Nick is not an option. Ashley's brother's not the forgive and forget type. Watch how the action adventure unfolds, with more twists and turns than you can imagine.....!!!!!!!brYou're definatly not in for a boring evening if you settle down with this!
A fast-paced action thriller with a twist! March 27, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
In this movie Ben Affleck plays Rudy a convict due for release. In a twist of fate Rudy takes his cell mates place in hooking up for the first time with Ashley (Rudy's cell mates pen pal). Everything from here on in is a case of Decieve or Decease! I love action movies and this one is a good one with plenty of action and pretty good acting from a well balenced cast.
well worth a watch January 8, 2005 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a much better film than I thought it would be. Charlize Theron is as beautiful as ever and the film does keep you guessing, which is rare these days.pWell worth buying
A good action film. August 5, 2006 DVD Fan (london, United Kingdom) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This film seems to have gone almost un-noticed, not heard of it before but when I saw the cast, I thought it should be pretty good. Also known as Reindeer games on region 1. The story is that a guy released from prisoner meets his cellmates pen friend played by the beautiful Charlize Theron. She has never seen the guy she has been writing to so he decides to be him. However her violent brother turns up wanting to know all about a casino he used to work in so he can rob it! So he now has to bluff what he knows because he has never worked there. There are some good ideas in the story and plot line although it does get a bit twisted towards the end. It has a slight low budget feel to it but overall not bad for a rent but far from a classic. 6/10
Started well........ July 4, 2001 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
....but unfortunately completely lost its way halfway through. This is a shame because they could have done so much with the story at the beginning, but the film is trying to be too clever for its own good with far too many implausible twists and turns, and after a while, you don't really care what happens. Also the unintentionally hilariously bad acting, particularly by Gary Sinise, has to be seen to be believed.
