Amazon.co.uk Review It's not quite as clever as it tries to be, but IThe Game/I does a tremendous job of presenting the story of a rigid control freak trapped in circumstances that are increasingly beyond his control. Michael Douglas plays a rich, divorced, and dreadful investment banker whose 48th birthday reminds him of his father's suicide at the same age. He's locked in the cage of his own misery until his rebellious younger brother (Sean Penn) presents him with a birthday invitation to play "The Game" (described as "an experiential Book of the Month Club")--a mysterious offering from a company called Consumer Recreation Services. Before he knows the game has even begun, Douglas is caught up in a series of unexplained events designed to strip him of his tenuous security and cast him into a maelstrom of chaos. How do you play a game that hasn't any rules? That's what Douglas has to figure out, and he can't always rely on his intelligence to form logic out of what's happening to him. Seemingly cast as the fall guy in a conspiracy thriller, he encounters a waitress (Deborah Unger) who may or may not be trustworthy, and nothing can be taken at face value in a world turned upside down. Douglas is great at conveying the sheer panic of his character's dilemma, and despite some lapses in credibility and an anticlimactic ending, IThe Game/I remains a thinking person's thriller that grabs and holds your attention. Thematic resonance abounds between this and ISeven/I and IFight Club/I, two of the other films by IThe Game /I's director David Fincher. -- IJeff Shannon, Amazon.com/I

Amazing-has to be seen to be believed October 11, 2003 Ben 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Plot summary-brA workaholic millionaire businessman (Douglas), is given a birthday present of a ticket for 'The Game' by his Brother (Sean Penn). He tells him it will 'change his life'. So Douglas signs up for this 'game' but is informed he has been rejected - but the game has only just begun.pMy thoughts-brThis is an outstanding psychological mystery/thriller with Micheal Douglas giving an outstanding performance as the control freak workaholic who has everything to a man no longer in control, with various strange events going on as he asks several questions including 'What is the game?' and 'who is in control'. He gives a fantastic performance as he slowly loses control because he loses his fortune and is implicated in a murder, while coming to see whils't before he had everything, this is the first time he has really lives.brI don't think there has been anything else like it and with its tension and strange events will keep you guessing right up to the end.brThe script and Douglas' performances are exceptional, and they are backed up by a good supporting cast and good direction, and they make one of the best and most original films of modern times.pRATING: 5 STARS *****
Not too much, but certainly not too little April 30, 2002 Christian Lowensprung (TRONDHEIM Norway) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
pThis is it, one of the movies that make Micheal Douglas outstanding.pA thriller with a blend of action, drama, and a slight pinch of horror. A movie that doesn't reveal too much, but builds and builds till the very intence ending. Excellent story, excellent acting, and excellent use of stylish props that work so much better than overrated computer graphics.pGreat film! I recommend it from the bottom of my heart. Don't read the back of the cover, just watch, and enjoy.
An amazing film that will keep you guessing. March 31, 2003 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Buy this film, then be prepared that once you have pressed "play" you won't be leaving your seat for the duration. A truely spectacular film that sails through the deep ocean of sinister intrigue keeping you the viewer involved in following each and every turn.pThe pace and measure of the film seems right; each moment is well directed but undeniably part of the whole. The acting is subtle, the effects are superb and the attention to detail in the plot is second to none.pBuy this, watch it right through and be preapred for a movie that must be described as "special". It will leave you thinking about it for a while later - just when did the game begin?
Dont miss this film! June 30, 2003 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
I was sceptical about this film, especially considering Michael Douglas is one of my least favourite actors, but now wish I had seen it in the theatre!pA dark and clever plot ends up with a twist to rival 'The Usual Suspects' and keeps you involved to the end.pBuy and you will not be disappointed....
Is this the real life or is this just fantasy? March 9, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
'The Game' is one of my favourite Michael Douglas films, along with A Perfect Murder. As the film is based around such a marvellously novel idea it is never obvious what will happen next and the outcome is completely unexpected. 'The Game' will swallow you up, immerse you in a fantastic plot, spin it around in your head and spit you out on the other side of an enormously enojoyable film. You'll wonder what happened to cunning plot ideas after this.
