Amazon.co.uk Review Julia Roberts and Clive Owen surprise and delight on multiple levels in emDuplicity,/em a caper film that keeps the audience guessing if the tone is cheeky, seriously, or both in exactly the same scene. Owen smolders as the relaxed, craggy sexual beast he's become--effortlessly--and Roberts is surprisingly mature and tic-less. And their chemistry threatens to explode out of the beaker. On one level, emDuplicity /emis a sparring romance, bringing to mind the no-holds-barred zingers between Cary Grant and Roz Russell in emHis Girl Friday/em. But the film has layers of action and suspense, as well as a neat spin on the spy business. Instead of hunting for, or protecting, confidential state nuclear secrets, as each character once did when they first met, now they are beholden to captains of industry and Madison Avenue--seeking secrets not of national security, but of formulas to the next great⦠moisturiser. Director Tony Gilroy, who wrote all the Bourne films and wrote and directed emMichael Clayton/em is clearly carving out a snappy path for himself as a master of sleek, suspenseful, energetic films that nonetheless appeal to a mass audience. A special shoutout to the opening scene of a mano a mano fistfight on a tarmac between Armani-clad CEOs (one played by an especially memorable Paul Giamatti). "You on one side, me on the other," says Roberts' Claire at one point to Owen's Ray. "It's perfect." Perfect grownup entertainment. em--A.T. Hurley/em

Duplicity September 18, 2009 Mrs. D. C. Atkinson 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Highly entertaining. Liked the little sting in the tail. Clive Owen and Julia Roberts make the ideal couple to present this type of film

I wasn't expecting too much from "Duplicity",but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a satisfying, well constructed pseudo spy thriller which kept me entertained throughout.Julia Roberts and Clive Owen play two government spies who team up to make a killing in the field of corporate espionage by undercovering a major commercial secret and selling it to the highest bidder. They think that they're really clever and masters of duplicity, but they soon come to realise that they're not as in control of their destinies as they would like to think. "Duplicity" is well acted, particularly by Julia Roberts and is an enjoyable film.
Great film, great acting! July 20, 2009 Ms. Ld Walker 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Have to say I disagree with some of the bad reviews. This film is great. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and there are no special effects, no guns, just pure acting and a great screen play! Julia Roberts steels this film, she is fantastic. If you like arty movies, where you have to try and figure it all out, you'll love this. I have to say though, it is worth watching twice. It is so much more enjoyable when you know the twisted ending. I cant wait to buy it!
Better than expected September 8, 2009 Noel mting (United KIngdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was much better than I had expected it to be having read some other reviews . Kept the brain ticking over nicely with an intriguing plot . Pretty good acting all round , well worth a watch .
An enjoyable, well contructed thriller but not without its faults August 10, 2009 John M (UK) Clive Owen and Julia Roberts are two agents working respectively for MI6 and the CIA who decide to go freelance, and work a scam that will net them $40m. The film is well put together with twists at various points along the route. However the film for me has several flaws which prevent me from rating it more highly. Firstly, the main plot concerns a pharmaceutical preparation and the details surrounding this (and I speak as someone with knowledge here) are frankly ridiculous! I'm afraid discovery, patenting, testing and launching of a new product just doesn't work anything like presented. I guess the story writers rely upon audience ignorance here. I'm also sure companies do not go in for organised industrial espionage in this manner, don't buy 70 small companies a year, and obviously have never heard of due diligence etc, etc, etc. Secondly, as usual, Clive Owen shows all the acting range, tonal and expression variation of a plank of wood, and there seems to be no real chemistry between him and Julia Roberts. Thirdly it relies upon a second coincidental meeting of the main characters (although whether it is actually coincidence is left slightly ambiguous!). Anyway, despite the flawed plot and the male lead I enjoyed the story development and film construction. Requires considerable suspension of disbelief, but still reasonably good viewing.
