Amazon.co.uk Review
Daniel Craig hasn't lost a step since iCasino Royale/i--this James Bond remains dangerous, a man who could earn that license to kill in brutal hand-to-hand combat… but still look sharp in a tailored suit. And iQuantum of Solance/i itself carries on from the previous film like no other 007 movie, with Bond nursing his anger from the Casino Royale storyline and vowing blood revenge on those responsible. For the new plot, we have villain Mathieu Amalric (iThe Diving Bell and the Butterfly/i), intent on controlling the water rights in impoverished Third World nations and happy to overthrow a dictator or two to get his way. Olga Kurylenko is very much in the "Bond girl" tradition, but in the Ursula Andress way, not the Denise Richards way. And Judi Dench, Jeffrey Wright, and Giancarlo Giannini are welcome holdovers. If director Marc Forster and the longtime Bond production team seem a little too eager to embrace the continuity-shredding style of the Bourne pictures (especially in a nearly incomprehensible opening car chase), they nevertheless quiet down and get into a dark, concentrated groove soon enough. And the theme song, "Another Way to Die," penned by Jack White and performed by him and Alicia Keys, is actually good (at times Keys seems to be channeling Shirley Bassey--nice). Of course it all comes down to Craig. And he kills. i--Robert Horton, Amazon.com/i

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic and sadly underated film.   May 24, 2009

The Bond franchise has taken a bold but timely step in attempting to bring Bond into the twenty first century - a step which, not surprisingly has many die-hards throwing up their hands in horror as the security blankets of pretty boy actor, cure-all gadgets and evil megalomaniac have been mostly dumped. But I firmly believe that in doing so the quality of the films has undergone a massive improvement. We no longer, as a society, believe that the 'enemy' is external to us, can be plausibly personified as single rogue dictators somewhere else, that all the problems of the world can be solved by science or that appearance is truth. So watching the old Bond films with their facile certainties and glossy escapism has no resonances with our more complex modern paranoias. It is this culture gap which the new Bond films address, and they do this brilliantly. br / br /We know that this film is part 2 of the story begun in Casino Royale. In Quantum of Solace, the psychological journey of the MI6 hit man reaches its denoument. To paraphrase Vesper Lynd, he is a maladjusted young man who gives little thought to sacrificing others for queen and country. He is a man whose only fully developed emotion is loyalty, whose ambition is to be an efficient killer, who looks for no moral high ground other than that of complete faith. But he is also a man who has discovered that, after all, he is able to love a woman, to contemplate a life within society rather than one only on its fringes. This inchoate emotional development is aborted by Vesper's betrayal and death. What now? This is the psychological point at which Quantum of Solace opens. The much berated opening scene is I think the first of a series of brilliant metaphors of Bond's internal landscape. The horrifying recklessness and fury of the driving sequence shows you exactly what he feels. The roughness of the editing reinforces this. The next scene of Bond as torturer forces the viewer to remember what he really is, what's been at stake here - a human life or an inhuman one. In this film we get to see his internal landscape - the desert scenes are particularly fine for this - and to follow him all the way through to a delicate resolution - the understanding that loyalty and betrayal are intertwined, provisional, uncertain categories, not the mutually exclusive ones that MI6 has a vested interest in training its agents to believe they are. Note the plays on this theme: the MI6 rogue agent earning money on the side, the betrayal of Felix Leiter by his own boss, the admissions that rendition occurs, M's unheeded warnings to the home office minister that Britain is doing business with a terrorist organisation - guilt is spilled right across society. br / br /Yes, the plot is a little complicated, not just a series of action sequences punctuated by naked girls or corpses (or the corpses of naked girls) but this reflects a sort of lurching both psychologically and also, one imagines, the reality of following slender leads against the grain in a complex investigation. br / br /The detail is superb. For example, Bond cannot speak Vesper's name until the final scene. This omission is subtle, yet suggests unarticulable loss. Naming her at the end signals that his Herculean struggle to resolve and understand the contradictions is coming to an end. br / br /This is a stunning, carefully composed, meaty film. For the first time we have an emotionally and psychologically coherent Bond. Daniel Craig is an extremely fine and sensitive actor (watch his face when he is being counselled by Mathis, his alternative future self, on the flight to Bolivia). In fact watch the film again, carefully. The mise en scene alone justifies a whole viewing. It stands up to all kinds of scrutiny and has interesting things to say about the modern dismay about the integration of 'enemy' with self.

5 out of 5 stars Ian Flemings Bond!   February 16, 2009

This biggest question with this film is `Is this a Bond movie?' In my opinion, it is how Bond was always supposed to be if you read the Ian Fleming novels. After many discussions with friends I think there will always be a difference of opinion. Many people expect the Bond movies to be like the Roger Moore incarnation, not early Connery and Dalton, while Craig is probably even grittier than even those two. I am actually a fan of this style. Ironically this movie is truer to the Fleming spirit than most other movies and it was not even based on one of his books. I agree however that this makes it stand out less from a Bourne movie or similar because of that. This movie carries on from Casino Royale, so re-watch that movie before seeing this if you can. I think the plot is complex, however no overly so, superbly acted and the action is excellent and quite believable. An excellent movie from start to finish, however don't expect gadgets, quips and humour.

Over the last 8 months or so this film has taken some considerable flack and i really have to say that i dont understand why, sure it isn't perfect but to give this film 1 star or hint that it is one of the worst bond films is frankly stupid. br / br /Die Another Day was a total shambles with little if no redeeming features, but then came along Daniel Craig who has dragged this series back from the dead, notably even the people who hate this film say he is brilliant. The action throughout the film is massively intense and too the point and whilst some of the camera work is chaotic i didn't find that it ruined my viewing experience in anyway... in fact i went to see it twice! br / br /Even though i have given this 5 stars i have to say there are a number of flaws.. in particular the characters: Agent Fields and Elvis the Henchman are the biggest waste of time, this is not a slur on their acting talents as much as the editing time and technique... Elvis in particular has an interesting background if you read up on the subject but none of this is highlighted at all! However for all my winging the editing in some places is what makes this film so interesting, especially the opening 30 minutes. br / br /Daniel Craig is ultimately what makes this such a watchable film, he is incredible as Bond, a man blinded with a cold calculating rage who murders and destroys without a second thought... first time that i have wondered whether Bond was actually a nice character at all... no Roger Moore antics here! br / br /My overall feeling is that it was a little short... an extra 20-25 minutes could have made this film brilliant but the lack of character development in places is a big disappointment, especially when the rest of the film is so right. br / br /9/10

5 out of 5 stars Amazing sequel - ignore the critics those who misread the story.   June 2, 2009

First off, this is an outstanding Bond film and one of the best, yes you read that right. This is a pure and true bond film in every sense of the word. br /Great action, great story, great bad guy, great women. There are people who totally did not get this film and think films like 'die another day' 'View to a kill' were amazing. The last great bond film in my opinion was 'Goldeneye'. Great intro to P Brosnan with some of the best action going. Then they got silly with 'die another day' with the worst storyline and bad guy ever......,oh can I wear a stupid robot electric hand please and have my entire features changed...,RUBBISH. br /This takes off exactly where we left and follows it on in a decent story and believable way. The end of the film is fantastic and not to mention the amazing 'Tosca' scene. The fight between Dominic and Bond was very real and brutal. He was a small wimpy guy who has to fight like a maniac to get anywhere. People loved Casino Royale and this is no different in the storytelling. br / br /AND people who want Bale as bond, get a grip. He was never right for the role and never will be. He's an amazing actor but certain people play Bond........,Craig is one of them. Lets hope he stays for at least another four more films. Can't wait for the next film and hopefully people who didn't like this will stay away from the next one as if they can't understand this one, what chance will they have in keeping up with the Quantum company and their antics.

5 out of 5 stars Where's the sense?   March 17, 2009

I don't usually write reviews, but i feel compelled to add a thought or two on this particular film. Firstly, this film is NOT as bad as everyone seems to be saying. It's biggest flaw is simply that it is not as good as Casino Royale. Which was so stupidly good that people had very high expectation sfor this. Needless to say i was still very impressed. The action scenes are very well presented and the new more human Bond is more than welcome in my opinion. I still came out of the cinema thinking 'my god Daniel Craig is cool, i wish I was that cool, Isn't Gemma what's her name gorgeous!' Job done. It seems to me that there are too many hardcore Bond fans who will always be looking to lay into these films. You simply have to remember, you can't just keep churning out the same old, same old. As many people have pointed out 'Die another day' was a turd of a film. People still go on about 'Q' being missing, but I am glad they did away with it. The gadget section at the beginning of the film, where Bond is given a host of items that just happen to be exactly what he needs in the rest of the story, please...! The modern film industry has been forced to grow out of these trends in recent years, you just can't get away with gratuitous cliches anymore. Films try, and they get torn to shreds by real critics. This is a very good action thriller, well above average, with solid performances all round and some great set pieces. Don't listen to all the anti-hype, watch it and make your own mind up. br / br /Oh, and the part where he free falls and deploys his parachute about a 5 metres above the round and gets straight up and walks away, so what? I could do it, stop being so wet! He's Bond, didn't you know that during his training to become a 00 agent he underwent an operation that plated all his bones with alloy adamantium, which is unbreakable. br / br /Anyway, I'm rambling when there are more pressing matters at hand, this film is currently scoring the same 3 stars as Transporter 3 and that's not fair. People actually go out there and buy/watch films on the strength of these reviews and scores and are in danger of thinking that this film is as bad, I defy anyone who didn't like this film to convince me that Transporter 3 is better. Come on guys, there is a great injustice going on here. If your into hating films and letting the world know about it, there is plenty to get your teeth stuck into with Transporter 3. br / br /In summary, please watch Quantum of Solace, it is good. Don't watch Transporter 3, it is poo.
