5 out of 5 stars Modern Classic Loaded With Real Classics   March 10, 2008
Mr. R. Fernandes (Bristol, UK)

Since featuring The Dramatics on his historic debut LP 'Doggystyle', Snoop has always demonstrated a real passion for classic black soul and funk music which pervades even his most menacing or mainstream releases. br / br /His albums often feature at least one or two tracks which develop classic 70's themes, either lifting samples or full instrumentation, through to featuring the likes of George Clinton, Stevie Wonder or the Bee Gees. br / br /Follow his career closely across more understated album tracks and through collaborative work with Nate Dogg such as their 213 group album and you'll instantly recognise Snoop's ear for good, classic, soulful or funk music. br / br /These intelligent musical influences have long deserved a full outing amid Snoop's increasingly guest-laden albums which attempt to appeal to every demographic in rap and beyond at the expense of any personal focus. br / br /Ego Trippin' finally seems to follow Snoop's own artistic direction and is therefore innevitably his most musical and most personal album to date - and not just due to the absence of features (just 3 of 20 tracks). br / br /Gone are collaborations with every platinum rap artist out there, gone are production credits that read like a who's who, gone even is planned work with Bono, Madonna and Mick Jagger - a measure of his solo intentions. br / br /Instead we're treated to Snoop's own passion for music, inspired by the 80's and 90's swing of Teddy Riley through to the 70's and 80's soul of the Gap Band and Charlie Wilson, littered with classic music in between. br / br /It's a musical resurrection for rap at a time when the genre has retreated underground, suffocated by a mainstream spotlight on 50 Cent's monotonous grumbling, Kayne West's quasi-pop, and Soulja Boy-esque crunk posturing. br / br /The rap mainstream has never sounded more tired, and, 15 years after Snoop last kick-started a new dawn for the genre, the veteran has gone back to basics to produce a mature CD which can restore rap's musical credibility.

Snoop makes albums which are to be listened to in their entirety. br / br /A superb mixture of trademark 'Dogg, and some real soul and r'n'b joints thrown into the mix. br / br /Like Snoop, love this. He just keeps on getting better.

Not usually a fan but this album is really good. Big fan of the Charlie Wilson track at the end which is 2pac - changes remix style. The t-pain track is wicked too. br / br /Simply buy it...you won't regret it
