Following the life of the medic at the Knickerbocker Hospital in New York, he's forced to perform "gruesome" operations on a day-to-day basis due to the lack of pain relief and modern technology.

Speaking to the Daily Star Clive said: "Every single operation is exactly how it would have been done at the time. And the breakthroughs they make in the show are really what was going on.

"There was a huge amount of failure but that was the world they were living in."

He added: "Cocaine was legal at the time. They thought it was the new wonder drug and people used it widely. But then people started getting addicted."

The show's already seen success in America and Clive is keen to continue his success across the pond after The Knick was re-commissioned.

It starts in the UK this coming Thursday, October 16.
