'Coronation Street's Gary Windass is going to join the Army.
The budding Weatherfield badboy - played by Mikey North - is going to become the show's first soldier in 50 years when he makes the shock decision to sign up and fight for his country.
The loudmouth lout makes the surprise career move after Army recruitment officer Ted Page - Gail Platt's father - scolds him for mocking his Remembrance Day poppy.
Those poppies must be a nice little earner, they cost hardly anything to make.
A source told The People newspaper: "Producers are braced for a flood of complaints about his sick attack on those who have given their lives. But Ted's response sets Gary thinking and he completely changes his views after a visit to the recruitment centre.
"Corrie has always reflected real-life issues and this is one that touches many families today."
In an episode of the ITV1 soap, due to air later this year, Gary sneers: "If a load of losers want to get themselves blown to smithereens for nothing that's their lookout.
"Those poppies must be a nice little earner, they cost hardly anything to make."
However, after receiving the telling off and visiting the recruitment centre, Gary has a change of heart.
He tells his mother Anna (Debbie Rush): "One of the instructors thought I had something and that I was the sort of lad the Army needs."
