The Water Diviner actor broke up from his wife Danielle Spencer in 2012 after he bought the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2006 and believes it was a good business decision, however by doing this his marriage suffered.

He revealed on America's CBS show 'Sunday Morning': "It ended up not being a bad business. No, it's not a bad business decision at all. But it's taken a lot of work and probably cost me my marriage."

"It took a lot of work, man, you know? It took a lot of work and I already had an extremely busy schedule."

The 51 year old has two children with Danielle- Charles (11) and Tennyson (8). She apparently understood that his work on movies would take time away from his family; however she was surprised when he decided to take on another commitment that meant he would see even less of his children and wife.

He added "My job was making films and my wife clearly understands what my job is. But, to her I suppose the football situation was needlessly taking me away."

He doesn't regret the decision to put in the work with South Sydney, however, because it has done positive things for the local community.

He said: "For me, taking over South Sydney and inspiring a new generation of South Sydney kids is about community independence.

"It's also come with a massive increase in the value of what the club is, so that's all good too."

The pair has recently been discussing their relationship as it stands. He said: "Technically we're married. We are separated and discussing what that means."
