A new study has found that the treats have a beneficial impact on cardiac health in a boost to those who are looking to celebrate Valentine's Day in style.

Dr. Avinash Hari Narayanan, clinical lead at London Medical Laboratory, said: "The good news for Valentine's Day is that chocolates and fizz, in moderation, might improve our heart health. Dark chocolate made from cocoa beans, beneficial plant compounds called polyphenols.

"These have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, while also producing nitrous oxide in the blood, helping relax blood vessels and so reduce blood pressure."

Increased levels of chocolate consumption are linked with a 31 per cent reduction in diabetes and a 29 per cent reduction in strokes, suggesting that the popular treat is good for the heart.

Meanwhile, research from the University of Reading found that sipping two glasses of champagne per day is good for circulation.
