The fruit has a high vitamin C content, which is known to improve well-being, but experts are now convinced that it provides us with a faster and longer-lasting improvement than supplements.

A team from the University of Otago in New Zealand conducted an eight-week dietary intervention of 155 adults with low vitamin C.

The participants took either a vitamin C supplement, placebo or two kiwi fruits daily before reporting their vitality, mood, sleep quality and physical activity via smartphone surveys.

Results published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed that kiwi fruits improved vitality and mood within four days - while the effect of the boost peaked at around 14-16 days.

Meanwhile, vitamin C supplements only marginally improved until day 12.

Dr. Ben Fletcher, the lead author of the study, said: "This helps us see that what we eat can have a relatively fast impact on how we feel."
