Elephants get drunk on rare fruit

''We watched in awe because the youngsters definitely seemed to display signs of being rather tipsy.''

A group of elephants became drunk after eating a rare fruit.

The herd of youngsters became intoxicated after eating marula fruit - which is said to make large mammals drunk when eaten in huge quantities - causing them to stumble around and fall over each other.

Ross Couper, a field guide at the safari outfit Singita in Kruger National Park, South Africa, was lucky enough to witness the comical event, reports The Telegraph newspaper.

He said: ''We watched in awe because the youngsters definitely seemed to display signs of being rather tipsy.''
