Two university friends have come up with Grove Eco-System in their shared student house, which uses a bamboo hand-made piece of furniture with a fish tank at the bottom, that produces ammonia-rich waste.

Microbes transform into nitrates which is used as an organic plant fertiliser and simultaneously supplies the plants with nutrients and the fish with clean water.

The unit costs $2,700 (£1,790) and the inventors are trying to crowdfund enough money to build and sell more units.
