Goldfish has brain surgery

A goldfish has undergone brain surgery.

''George is now doing great; he spent a few days in the tank, and is now swimming happily in the pond.''

The 10-year-old fish, named George, was put under general anaesthetic before undergoing the 45 minute operation to remove a debilitating tumour from the side of his head.

Dr Rich of Lort Smith Animal Hospital in northern Melbourne, Australia, performed the operation on George, who had been struggling to swim and eat before receiving the treatment.

He told The Age newspaper: ''It's a very fiddly procedure, and you have to be very careful about blood loss.

''It can be a few hundred dollars.
