Virgin Atlantic is operating the flight from London Heathrow to John F. Kennedy International Airport on Tuesday (28.11.23) that will use pure sustainable aviation fuel (Saf).

Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson and UK Transport Secretary Mark Harper are among the passengers who will be on the flight.

Saf is seen as essential to reduce the aviation industry's carbon emissions but is far more expensive to produce than conventional aeroplane fuel.

It is made from sustainable sources including agricultural waste and used cooking oil - meaning that production uses 70 per cent less carbon.

Harper told the BBC: "We're looking at sustainable aviation fuel, a big step forward today, first 100 per cent use of it in a big commercial flight.

"This is a really big step forward. It's because we want to make sure, this Government wants to make sure, that ordinary people can continue flying cost-effectively and get around the world. We saw how much people wanted to do that."
