Researchers at the University of Tokyo have captured mystery signals that have been travelling through space for over a decade.

Some experts are convinced that the fast radio bursts (FRBs) could be extraterrestrials attempting to make contact with Earth but others suspect that black holes are responsible.

The researchers have suggested that the FRBs are caused by starquakes on rapidly spinning neutron stars that possess the most powerful magnetic fields in the known universe.

They found that the energy released by the tremors on the surface of the neutron stars are similar to those on Earth.

The final analysis showed a "striking" similarity between FRBs and earthquake data.

Professor Tomonori Totani said: "Recent observational advances have led to the detection of thousands more FRBs, so we took the opportunity to compare the now large statistical data available for FRBs with data from earthquakes and solar flares, to explore possible similarities."
