Joe Biden has eased concerns about US support for Ukraine

The US president informed other world leaders in a call that Washington's support for the war-torn nation will not waver even though billions of dollars in aid were ditched from a government bill.

Biden had asked Congress for $24 billion in aid for Kyiv but the final deal amounted to the much-reduced sum of $6 billion as many Republican politicians are unhappy about the amount of US spending on the conflict.

Washington has provided over £93 billion to Ukraine as well as tanks, helicopters and millions of rounds of ammunition to assist in the war with Russia but a leaked letter says the Pentagon is running low on cash to replace "critical" weapons sent to the war-hit country.

Biden signed legislation to avoid a federal government shutdown and stressed that aid for Ukraine cannot be delayed by petty politics.

After a bill was passed to fund government operations until next month, the president said: "We cannot under any circumstances allow America's support for Ukraine to be interrupted.

"Stop playing games, get this done."

Polish president Andrzej Duda said that Biden had told NATO allies that there is more support for Ukraine in Congress than news reports have suggested.

He said: "President Joe Biden began with telling us about the situation in the US and what is the real political situation around Ukraine.

"He assured that there is backing for the continuing support for Ukraine, first of all for the military support. He said that he will get backing in the Congress."
