The former US Secretary of State made the fashion choice after "suggestive" photos taken of her during a visit to Brazil were used to advertise raunchy underwear in the 1990s.

The Brazilian lingerie company DuLoren used an image that offered a glimpse of the then First Lady's underwear, with the words: "A tribute to one of the most important women of the decade."

Recalling the incident in an interview with CBS News, Clinton said: "I was sitting on a couch, and the press was let in - there was a bunch of them shooting up.

"All of a sudden the White House gets alerted to these billboards that show me sitting down with I thought my legs together, but the way it's shot, it's sort of suggestive."

The politician continued: "And then I also began to have the experience of having photographers all the time - I'd be on a stage, I'd be climbing stairs, and they'd be below me. I just couldn't deal with it, so I started wearing pants."
