Man pretends to be kidnapped

A man pretended he'd been kidnapped so that he could stay out later.

''one of the most foolish and irresponsible incidents''

The 32-year-old phoned his girlfriend to say he was being held hostage and that his ''captor'' was refusing to release him unless he was paid a £50 ransom, triggering her to call the police, as he wanted to stay out with his mates for longer.

And, while the police put together a search party, the man in question continued his night of binge drinking at a house party in Lancashire, North West England.

Over a dozen police officers conducted house-to-house enquiries, checked CCTV footage and analysed mobile phone data during ''one of the most foolish and irresponsible incidents'', according to the Daily Star newspaper.

Detective Inspector Jo Clawson added: ''The man's girlfriend was absolutely beside herself with worry and genuinely concerned that he would come to harm.''
