The report, conducted at the University of Houston, suggests there's a correlation between spending spare time on the social networking website and developing depressive symptoms.

The authors of the study noted: ''Facebook often gives us information about our friends that we are not normally privy to, which gives us even more opportunities to socially compare.''

The study said it's impossible to resist the temptation to compare lives with people you know.

It read: ''You can't really control the impulse to compare because you never know what your friends are going to post.''
