T S Eliot

Valerie Eliot was the literary executor of her husband the late TS Eliot, who was recognised for poems such as Portrait of a Lady, A Cooking Egg and The Waste Land. Her estate announced that she had passed away last Friday in her home in London, following a short illness.

Valerie met TS Eliot in the published Faber & Faber, a London based firm, when he was a director and she was a secretary.

They were married in 1957 and it was reported that, despite it being a second marriage for Eliot, were happy together even with the significant age difference of 40 years.

Following Eliot’s death in 1965, Valerie spent her time editing his poems and letters to become published and rejected offerings of a biography about his life and works, which respected her late husband’s instructions.

Eliot was also noted for his work as a playwright, published, literary and social critic as well as for his poetry.
