Harry Potter fans were sent into a frenzy by a report suggesting Daniel Radcliffe could reprise the iconic role.

The 27-year-old star - who last featured as Harry five years ago in 'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2' - was linked with a return to the part by the New York Daily News, who claimed Warner Brothers were lining up another trilogy.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the speculation prompted the legions of Potter fans worldwide to take to social media about Daniel's potential return.

One Twitter user, Shay, wrote: "Oh my God, please bring back the original cast."

Similarly, Ben White tweeted directly to Warner Brothers, the studio behind all eight of the Potter movies, imploring them to make another film with Daniel as the star.

However, their hopes were soon dashed when the film studio released a statement to clarify the situation.

Warner Brothers said: "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' is a stage play, with no plans for there to be a film."

The two-part play opened in London's West End in August and has subsequently earned rave reviews from critics and fans.

The production centres on Potter's son Albus.

The play features older versions of the characters Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley and Potter.

However, rather than using the members of the original film cast, the play stars Noma Dumezweni, Paul Thornley and Jamie Parker respectively.

In recent years, meanwhile, Daniel has distanced himself from the role of Potter, although he has not completely ruled out reprising the part in the future.

He recently said: "You never want to close a door on anything, especially something that has been so good to me.

"At the moment I am definitely not at a stage where I would feel comfortable going back to it, who knows in ten and 20 years if I would feel differently about that.

"And I think I have still got a little while for me to be age appropriate for this Harry."
