The pair co-wrote 'Til it Happens to You' for the documentary film 'The Hunting Ground', which deals with rape on college campuses, and Gaga provided the vocals.

The pop superstar was not eligible to be nominated for her contribution as the Television Academy's guidelines state an artist must be responsible for 20 per cent or more of the work and in this case it was decided that Diane was responsible for 90 per cent of the song.

After collecting her statuette, Diane, 60, dedicated her win to publicist Ronni Chasen, who was tragically shot and killed as he was driving home from the film premiere of Christina Aguilera's movie 'Burlesque' in 2010.

Gaga, 30, was not present at the ceremony at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles as she is on a promotional tour for her new single 'Perfect Illusion'.

'Til it Happens to You' was also nominated for in the Best Song Written for Visual Media category at the Grammy Awards and for Best Original Song at the this year's Academy Awards.

Gaga herself has revealed she was was the victim of rape when she was 19 and at the Oscars she performed the track with other victims of sexual abuse to make a poignant statement about surviving the ordeal.
