The 'Hello' hitmaker picked up the first award of the night - for British Female Solo Artist - and used her speech to give a shout out to Kesha after a court recently ruled the 'Tik Tok' hitmaker must abide by her contract with producer Dr. Luke, despite her claims he sexually abused her.

Adele said: "I'd like to take this moment to publicly support Kesha."

Adele also spoke about how grateful she was for the success of her comeback album, '25', saying: "Thank you so much. After being away for so long and to come back to this is incredible.

She also gave a shout out to the other nominees in her category before ending the short speech with her support for Kesha.

Host Declan Donnelly made a joke in reference to her 2012 Brit Awards when Adele was cut off during her speech, saying: "Nice to see her get to the end."

Adele was presented with the award by One Direction's Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne, who attended without bandmates Harry Styles and Niall Horan.

She is also up for British Single, MasterCard British Album of the Year and British Artist Video of the Year and is in the running for the BRITs Global Success Award, with the winner of the prize determined by international sales.

Meanwhile, Coldplay opened the Brit Awards, in association with Mastercard, with 'Hymn for the Weekend', while Justin Bieber took to the stage to perform 'Love Yourself' and 'Sorry'.
