The 28-year-old singer took home the BBC Radio 2 Album of the Year award for her critically-acclaimed LP '25' as well as Song of the Year for her hit track 'Hello'.

Reading out a message from Adele, Robbie Williams - who accepted the award on his pal's behalf - said: "Thank you for this award. I feel a bit bad winning it as the album has been out for so long. But nevertheless, you know I love you. Always have and always will."

Adding his own message for the songstress, he shared: "I'd just like to say congratulations Adele, it's an honour to accept this award on your behalf. It's a beautiful album and you're an incredibly deserving winner and also an amazing mom. She's an incredible mom; the hardest working mom in showbiz. Love you Adele! Congratulations!"

Meanwhile, Geri Horner accepted Adele's award for Song of the Year and invited her around for tea at the former Spice Girls' house.

Reading a message from Adele, host Fearne Cotton said: "Hello again! I'm so sorry I'm not there and I can't wait. It's been a long year on the road and this makes me feel a little less homesick. I can't wait for Wembley and then I can't wait to get back to normal!"

Elsewhere in the show, Coldplay picked up the BBC Music British Artist of the Year Award and accepted it via video message as they walked onto the stage at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.

Frontman Chris Martin said: "Hello BBC Music Awards, Fearne and Claudia, we are Coldplay and we just got told about winning this beautiful BBC Artist of the Year award. Sorry we're not there, we are about to go on stage in Australia. Look at all those people and we love you and we are so grateful and we'll see you so soon. Thank you so much and goodbye."

Fans were also treated to a whole host of fantastic performances from top artists including the 1975, who kicked off proceedings with their track 'The Sound' whilst Robbie Williams spectacularly closed the show with his song 'Sensational'.

John Legend performed a stunning mash up of 'All of Me' and 'Love Me Now' whilst Craig David took the roof off the ExCel in London with his classic track 'Rewind' and new song 'Ain't Giving Up'. Other performers included Zara Larsson, Lukas Graham and BBC Music Introducing Artist of the Year winner Izzy Bizu.
