Amy Poehler was a "late bloomer".

The 44-year-old actress has confessed she endured a tough time growing up in the 80s, but on reflection, she doesn't think being a late developer has been a bad thing for her.

She joked: "I was a late bloomer which I would recommend to anybody. That's a tough thing when you get most popular, it's all down hill from there."

Amy recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and she's tremendously proud of the honour.

She told the 'Today Show': "It was great ... my parents were there, my family was there. It's something I never even imagined.

"I'd never even been to California growing up. I never knew anyone who was an actor or a writer. I didn't know anybody famous so to be included in that fine company ... it was really special."

Amy stars in new comedy movie 'Sisters' with Tina Fey, but she is philosophical about the film's money-making prospects, as it's being released at the same time as the J.J. Abrams-directed 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'.

She quipped: "We're coming out against a little indie film called 'Star Wars'.

"Made by a first time director, I'd love everybody to give him a chance - week two - and week one go see 'Sisters'."
