The former politician and his professional partner Katya Jones are thrilled to have made it through to dance in Blackpool next week as Ed admitted it has always been his goal throughout the competition.

Thanking DJ Jeremy - who was eliminated from the competition last year the week before Blackpool - for his support, Ed wrote on Twitter: "Cheers @theJeremyVine - you have been my inspiration for this whole series - getting to Blackpool was always my Wembley ! (sic)"

And Jeremy is now backing the ex-shadow chancellor to win the glitterball trophy.

He posted: "Totally delighted. Joy of @edballs is perfect antidote to dark nights and a troubled world. #YouCanWinThisEd (sic)"

Ed has been flooded with celebrity support following his hilarious 'Gangnam Style' routine at the weekend.

Comic Jack Whitehall tweeted: "Hi I'm Ed Balls and I'm here to save 2016!"

Actor and director David Schneider posted: "Thanks to Ed Balls for making me smile for the first time in days. #Strictly (sic)"

'Call the Midwife' star Miranda Hart was equally cheered.

She wrote: "Still reliving the joyful alignment of @bbcstrictly a Salsa @edballs and Gangnam style. It's bizarrely just what the world needed. (sic)"

Former cricketer Andrew Flintoff simply posted: "Go on @edballs !!!! Genius dancing #strictly (sic)"

And 'Pointless' expert Richard Osman was also delighted.

He wrote: "The new member of parliament for Blackpool is Ed Balls #Strictly (sic)"

While one of Ed's biggest critics throughout the competition has been Lord Alan Sugar, the 'Apprentice' mogul admitted before the show he was "almost admiring" him and even thought he could win.

However, after his dance, he posted: "Oh @edballs even if the public vote you in again you will have to admit it can't be right. It's a dance competition @bbcstrictly (sic)"

And following Daisy Lowe's elimination, he tweeted: "Wow @edballs is through again on @bbcstrictly (sic)"
