The 38-year-old actress revealed art imitated life when she was shooting her new film ‘Rare Beasts’ - in which she plays a single mother trying to have it all – because it was so “full on”, she rarely saw her sons Winston, 12, and Eugene, nine, who she has with ex-husband Laurence Fox.

Billie – who was expecting daughter Tallulah, now two, when she made the film – said: “It’s always the same, whenever I’m working my personal life falls apart.

“So I didn’t see my kids a great deal, even though they’d often come to the set and hang out a bit there, but it was snatched moments.

“I was also pregnant and about to have my third child, so I would say that it was a pretty full-on experience and one that meant I didn’t have a life beyond set.”

The star – who has Tallulah with boyfriend Johnny Lloyd – also wrote the film and drew on her own experiences when it came to creating her character, Mandy.

She told HELLO! magazine: “’Rare Beasts’ is about a woman in her mid-30s – single mum, professional woman, I guess trying to navigate modern love and modern feminism and this have-it-all culture, which I think we need to be a bit more honest about.

“It was born out of a period of time where I was observing a lot of friends having this sort of experience and crisis and yet the messaging was, ‘You can do it all, you can be super successful and have a really meaningful relationship with your kids, a passionate love affair with your partner’. And all I could see were people unravelling.

“I didn’t see the success story of all of that and I just knew I wanted to talk honestly about what that actually looks like.

“So it comes from my late 20s and early 20s when I started to see that fallout.”
