Elizabeth Pena died due to complications caused by alcohol abuse, it has been revealed.

The actress passed away in Los Angeles aged 55 last week following a brief illness, and it's now said that she suffered from cirrhosis of the liver "due to alcohol".

According to TMZ, Elizabeth had the disease for months, but shortly before she died it became acute.

The site obtained a copy of the star's death certificate which explained she had acute gastrointestinal bleeding just hours before her death, causing her heart to stop.

Her manager had previously claimed her death had been because of natural causes following her brief illness.

Recently finishing filming on action series Matador for the El Rey network, the broadcasters said they were "deeply saddened" by the loss of such a talent.

Their statement read: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague, Elizabeth Pena.

"She was a role model, a truly extraordinary performer and an inspiration in every sense of the word. Our thoughts are with Elizabeth's family and friends during this difficult time. She ‎will be deeply missed."

Elizabeth leaves behind her husband Hans Rolla and two children.
