The 'Jailhouse Rock' hitmaker passed away in 1977 aged 42 and although he never performed in the UK, his ex-wife Priscilla Presley claims he was gearing up to play shows in the country when he died.

She revealed: "He was preparing for a tour over here before he passed."

Despite his legacy as the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Priscilla, now 70, believes he never felt appreciated by critics for being such a revolutionary artist, especially when he hit the music scene in the 50s.

Asked whether she thought he got the critical acclaim he deserved, she said: "No I don't. God I wish people only knew what he would do to be able to get that sound. When you were in the recording studio with him he actually was the producer. He knew exactly what he wanted to hear and what he didn't want to hear. But people don't realise that he was a perfectionist and he lived his music."

Priscilla is currently promoting a new album from the star titled 'If I Can Dream' which features recordings of the singer accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Speaking of the LP, she explained: "In Vegas he was able to do what he wanted to do on stage and on his albums he wasn't, because you know it's just a little bit more sedate. Still when I hear the album it makes me feel good because it's something that I see him do on stage but [we've] been able to bring it to an album."

During their time together they had daughter Lisa Marie Presley, who now has four children of her own, who Priscilla believes Elvis would have loved.

Speaking on ITV show 'Good Morning Britain', she added: "They love his music, they have much appreciation for their grandfather and I think he would absolutely adore them."
