Suzanne Shaw has been sober for more than four years

The 42-year-old singer - who shot to fame as a teenager when she joined pop group Hear'Say - has not had an alcoholic drink for more than four years and thinks it is "important" that other people realise the health benefits of cutting out the booze.

She told New! magazine: "It wasn't healthy, and it wasn't something that was going to benefit my life. I didn't have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, it just wasn't for me.

"I think it's important that we save so much money and the byproduct is you lose a bit of weight. There is never a downside to it - it's always a benefit. And no beer fear! That's the thing that was the absolute best for me."

The 'Pure and Simple' hitmaker has not weighed herself since going sober but feels "stronger and healthier" in general and wants others to know how "harmful" drinking can be.

She said: "I've not stepped on the scales for years actually, so I don't know my actual weight, but I just feel stronger and healthier. I go to the gym, I take part in ultra-marathons [long-distance running races that are longer than a marathon], and I'm doing a HYROX competition in a few weeks, which is CrossFit. I focus so much on my health now. I'm down to a size eight in clothes, too.

"I think it's important we understand alcohol is harmful, and I think it's a really good thing to take that break, and if you can go longer, that's fantastic. Starting with a break, like a lot of people have just done with Dry January, is certainly a great way to go.
