The late actor's dad Kim Ledger has admitted that him and his family are over the moon for the 37-year-old actress and her new husband Phil Elverum after it was revealed last week that they had got married in a secret ceremony in New York.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, he said: "We are terribly happy, it is great."

Kim is yet to meet Michelle's new man but plans to do so "soon."

He explained: "She's very private and I don't really like to make too many comments about her, but we are very happy [for her]."

Although Heath's mother and father are no longer together - having split up when he was a child - the pair have remained in contact with Michelle since his passing in 2008 as they were keen to keep a relationship with their granddaughter Matilda, 12.

Michelle started dating Heath - who died in 2008 following a cardiac arrest brought on by a drugs overdose - in 2004 after they met on the set of 'Brokeback Mountain'.

They welcomed their daughter Matilda into the world the following year but split in 2007 after Michelle reportedly found out that he had been abusing drugs.

Michelle is known for keeping her private life close to her chest but couldn't resist boasting about her new husband in a recent interview with Vanity Fair magazine.

The 'Dawson's Creek' alum said: "I never gave up on love.

"I always say to Matilda, 'Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes.' Obviously I've never once in my life talked about a relationship. But Phil isn't anyone else. And that's worth something.

"Ultimately the way he loves me is the way I want to live my life on the whole. I work to be free inside of the moment. I parent to let Matilda feel free to be herself, and I am finally loved by someone who makes me feel free."
