The 37-year-old actor and TV presenter has revealed he sought out professional help in order to get his partying lifestyle under control.

He said: "I'd been going out a lot.

"The truth is, I had to learn how to stay in on my own. Because I was only really going out to not be on my own and then what you realise is, until I just get used to coming in, shutting the door, silence, what should I have for dinner?

"Sitting down, TV on, eating that - done now, I'll go to sleep, maybe I'll try and read something. Falling asleep and waking up. I realised that's just not something I've ever done or been good at."

Although the therapy didn't cause James to live like a "monk", he felt it was a necessary step at that stage of his career.

James told the American radio host Howard Stern: "I did a bit of therapy. Three months. I still did go out sometimes, I wasn't a monk! It wasn't even about women, it was just going out and being around attention which I don't think is necessarily good for you."

James also said his slightly more conservative lifestyle led him to meet his wife Julia and he admitted that for himself at least, it was a case of love at first sight.

He said: "For her, probably not. We'd talked for a while about going out too much. You can do it when you're 20 but not when you're 30.

"I said if you ever just want to do nothing maybe we could do nothing together. And if we keep doing nothing there's a possibility this nothing could become something. I cooked a steak, it was no dress up."
