The 37-year-old talk show host - whose Carpool Karaoke segment is frequently the highlight of his late-night show - will present the upcoming ceremony, which recognises excellence on stage, and is hoping for an informal performance from all the celebrity attendees.

He told 'Late Night' host Seth Meyers: "I thought, 'Why don't we have a big, sort of karaoke-type sing-along in the Beacon theatre?' Because there's all these incredibly talented people in there.

"So I might go out and give them some drinks and then see if I can get, like, Barbra Streisand to sing something."

However, he insists the sing-along wouldn't be for the TV audience as it would only be staged "during the commercial breaks" and before the ceremony starts.

He added: "We'll have our own show that no one [at home] will see."

While his talk show rival Seth was impressed with the idea, he was concerned it could provoke rage from the evening's attendees.

He said: "This is a great idea, but here's my genuine fear - if Barbra Streisand is singing, and then you say, 'No, you have to stop because the show's coming back on, [everyone is] going to be mad at you."

But James isn't expecting his idea to take off in the way he hoped.

He replied: "Well, I think if I get Barbra Streisand to sing, I won't care.

"That's not going to happen, though. The truth is it's more likely going to be me and my dad singing 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling.' "

While the British star is excited about hosting the prestigious awards show, he was disappointed to discover it didn't help him pull any strings when it came to getting tickets for hot production 'Hamilton'.

He said: "I was gonna get my parents tickets. They fly in on Friday, I thought, 'Oh, I'll get them tickets to Hamilton. I'm the host of the Tonys, I'll be able to pull some strings.'...

"$1,500 each! No, I'm alright. I'm good."

The Tony Awards air on CBS at 7pm on Sunday (12.06.16).
