Kanye West surprised students at a Los Angeles college on Friday, September 19.

The singer spent over two hours speaking to 40 pupils from the digital communications department at LA Trade Technical College before spending time with troubled youth, who were taing part in a summer bridge programme.

Talking about his own experiences and personal struggles through music, fashion and graphic arts, he stressed how important it is to get an education.

Andre Pitts III - one of the students - explained how the rapper "didn't try" to teach or preach, but simply shared his own life experiences.

Speaking to Vice.com Andre explained: "It went on for about an hour and a half and Kanye discussed a lot of things but mainly about his inspirations. He mentioned Ice Cube being one of his biggest inspirations, but also one of his biggest let downs. He also discussed Steve Jobs, 2Pac and his grandfather.

"I've listened to Kanye since I was younger but I can't rate him as a teacher because he didn't come to teach a fashion class, he just spoke about his inspirations. He didn't try to be a teacher, he simply spoke about how life really is."

This visit marked Kanye's fourth time speaking to students in LA, and it forms part of the 240-hour community service sentence he was handed after striking a plea deal over allegedly assaulting a photographer last year.
