The 67-year-old journalist - who has Ellie, 32, and 28-year-old Caroline with her late husband Jay Monahan - is mostly thrilled that her eldest is expecting her first baby but admitted that the milestone served as a reminder of how quickly life goes by.

She told Us Weekly: "I think 99 percent was, ‘I’m so excited.’ And one percent was, ‘Holy s***', I'm old enough to be a grandmother. It’s sort of almost like your life flashes before your eyes."

The former talk show host - who lost her husband Jay when he died of colon cancer aged just 42 in 1998 but went on to marry businessman John Molner in 2014 - added that it will be "surreal" to see her daughter holding a baby of her own but is enjoying "every minute" of life now that she has realised she cannot turn back time.

She said: "To see someone you remember holding as a baby, suddenly having a baby herself, it’s just a slightly surreal experience, I think, especially the first time. I am absolutely thrilled about it. I cannot convince FatherTime to turn the clock back and so I’m embracing every moment and every minute."

Katie insisted that she "cannot wait" for the new arrival and because Ellie has chosen not to find out the gender of her baby, the whole thing is "truly going to be a surprise" for everyone.

She said: "I can’t wait until they say, ‘It’s a boy!’ or ‘It’s a girl!’ in the delivery room because I didn’t find out with my And I know that gender reveal parties are all the rage, except when they turn into a brush fire. Right? But I feel like there’s so few surprises in life that it’s really fun not knowing.

"I’m not going to be that kind of pushy mom and grandmother. I really believe that less is more when it comes to advice."
